Spring Clean Sparkle

I saw an article in a magazine just the other day titled "Spring Clean Your Life"....and I thought...uh wow that is dead on. When I think about spring cleaning, I think about out with the old, in with the new as well as update and re-purpose (pretty much my year round mantra actually). However, spring has that renewal sensation where I want to toss out old crap that has no purpose, I cannot do anything with, and it is just sitting around collecting dust. The air is still a little cool and the breezes coming through add to that feeling of out with the old...and in with the new! An amazing time of year! I love most of the seasons for various reasons and look to enjoy each one of them! And Spring sparkle!!! Clean up and then see if you can make some of those pieces sitting around pop a bit more! It might be a new paint color or maybe spruce it up with a new covering, the list goes on!
While I am so wanting to spend hours lost in a project, work has taken me out of town for a bit and now keeps me pretty busy so unfortunately I haven't gotten to that new piece (a super cute wooden desk that I am dying to paint!!), but soon....I haven't forgotten about you Super Cute Desk....
In the meantime, I wanted to share with you an awesome product that I found years ago and use it with pretty much every painting project. It's a primer, but not just any primer...it's called Zinsser Bull's Eye 1-2-3 Primer and I've used both the can of liquid as well as the spray. If you are painting, say, a flat surface, then you'll probably want to use the can of liquid and a small sponge roller (like 3-4" wide kind of small sponge roller). On the other hand, if you are painting a scrolly or other multi-surfaced item, the spray paint version will probably be your better bet. This primer, I've found, will allow you to paint on almost any surface. You know that old laminate side table you hate but cannot figure out what to do with? Well, this primer will allow paint to actually adhere to it and not scratch off (because you know the furniture makers in the 50's, 60', hell...70's and 80's too... thought laminate would be great right? But once you got it, good luck changing it! This primer gives you that freedom to update it! Just put a medium level consistent coating of the primer first (the sponge roller eliminates any paint brush streaks btw...or if you are using the spray, make it a light dusting and do a few layers....nothing thick for this primer)...let it dry....then paint my friend....paint! And may your spring cleaning sparkle!

Great question! So I would just sand to smooth any scratches/bumps/previous drippy paint, but not to remove paint down to the original surface. You definitely could, but I find that it's not always necessary.
Thanks so much! Glad you find these helpful! I've seen your work in that desk you re-painted, beautiful!!
Do you find you still need to use some sandpaper prior to priming? Love these tips & tricks from a pro!!
