Letting loose with color!

I told you I wasn't going to forget about that cute little desk a friend of mine gave to me....and I didn't! When my friend gave me the piece, she said she'd seen my work and knew what I could do with it. I was so excited to paint and indeed I may have mentioned it one or two...hundred times to you....I decided to have a little fun with the color. Who am I kidding, I OFTEN have fun with color and with this piece I knew I wanted it to be a bit funky. So almost immediately I kept thinking of some sort of navy and maybe some accents....but I figured I'd start and see where it took me. After removing the drawer pulls, I put my fav primer on the piece (Zinsser 123) then sprayed on what I thought would be a nice, dark, midnight blue. Well well well, that was not quite how it turned out. Funny how things don't always work out like you thought (I'm sure there is some sort of metaphor for life here, Midge, but we'll let this one slide lol). At this point, I turned to another dark blue. I still wanted to keep with that line, but I needed the right shade. I believe this one is titled Ink, and it is perfect! The picture makes it look a bit lighter than it actually is because it truly looks like deep, dark blue ink....exactly what I wanted. The ribbon-like decorative portion coupled with the lines and details were things I wanted to showcase in a subtle, elegant way. What better way than with a rich navy ink-y (yes this should be a word) color. But you know me, sometimes elegant can get too serious...I love elegant, but I wanted to keep an element of whimsy and fun. So, I decided to paint the drawer pulls a color that pops! A green the color of grass was exactly what I was looking for! Lastly, to provide the finishing touches, I applied several coats of a clear satin poly to the top of the desk, waxed the rest of it, and applied a coat or two of clear matte poly to the drawer pulls. The result? Elegant with a touch of whimsy! Never forget the fun! Enjoy!
